The Delphi are known as o "navel of Gher». The term "Delphi», according to one version, came from ancient greek word "or Delphi», pu means "womb, belly", because of its shape or because the mother goddess Earth was worshiped there during the Mycenaean era. According to legend, when Zeus released two eagles, one from the East and the other from the West, they met at this place, which was considered the center of the world. |

The oldest finds date back to the Neolithic era (4,000 BC) and come from a cave on Parnassos, the Korykeio Andros, in which the first cults were held. |

Delphi, in the SW. side of Parnassos, were in ancient times a very important political, cultural and religious center, a symbol of the unity of ancient Hellenism for many centuries, and was the seat of the famous Oracle of Apollo.
